What is Gongkwon Yusul?
Gongkwon Yusul (GKY) is a system combining punches & kicks, elbow & knee strikes, throws & takedowns, and ground striking & grappling, all intended to be applied practically in a free sparring situation.
Who is behind the art?
Grandmaster Kang Jun
Grandmaster Kang Jun is a well renowned man with decades of Martial experience. Being 6th Dan Hapkido, 4th Dan Taekwondo, Judo State Champion and formally trained in Japanese Jujitsu (Hakko-Ryu) and Korean Kickboxing (Kyuk Too Ki), Grandmaster Kang has integrated traditional and modern methods to create a complete fighting system.
Why GKY for me?
GKY was launched in 1996 and since then has grown to over 50 dojangs in Korea as well as expanded internationally to Brazil, USA, Canada, Russia, Spain and Australia. It has a longstanding history and is rapidly growing (already practiced in three states of Australia!) With the explosion of Mixed Martial Arts in the past decade, technical areas in traditional arts are slowly beginning to expand. GKY offers an effective system that completes the bridge between traditional arts like Hapkido and modern MMA styles by integrating the respect & manner found in traditional systems.
Even though GKY may have an active competition element and includes alot of techniques in its sparring that are used in today’s MMA competitions, it is not a sports focused art. The set grading system is not based on competition performance (such as BJJ, Judo, Boxing & Kickboxing). GKY is broad in its philosophy and application of technique.
The art's rapid expansion is due to its approach to contact sparring, where takedown and groundwork techniques are seamlessly integrated with stand-up fighting skills. Another uniqueness of GKY is Grandmaster Kang's integration of specific self defence techniques into sparring, making them able to be applied in normal free sparring situations.
