Rhys Ly

Rhys Ly is one of HCA's Main Instructors and the Captain of the HCA Eagles Demonstration Team. Having trained in Hapkido since 2014 and taught classes since 2018, Rhys has developed a strong passion for helping students achieve their goals while experiencing the many benefits that martial arts can bring to everyday life. He currently holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Hapkido and teaches at both the Croydon Headquarters and Ermington studios.

As an instructor, Rhys is committed to creating a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment where students of all ages can develop confidence, discipline, resilience, and respect. He believes that martial arts is about much more than learning self-defence techniques—it is a vehicle for personal growth, leadership development, and building the skills needed to overcome challenges both inside and outside the dojang.

Rhys teaches Children's, Youth, and Adult classes, adapting his teaching style to suit the needs of each student while maintaining the high standards and values that HCA is known for. His approachable nature, strong leadership, and dedication to student development have made him a respected mentor within the HCA community.

Beyond his instructional responsibilities, Rhys plays a significant role in the ongoing growth and development of HCA. He contributes to student recruitment initiatives, supports the development of HCA's digital presence, and works closely with the leadership team to enhance programs and opportunities for students.

Main Instructor Responsibilities

As one of HCA's Main Instructors, Rhys is responsible for:

  • Planning and teaching Children's, Youth, and Adult classes
  • Assessing student progress and determining eligibility for grading
  • Supporting student acquisition and development at HCA Ermington
  • Assisting with the development of HCA website content and digital initiatives

Captain – HCA Eagles Demonstration Team

As Captain of the HCA Eagles Demonstration Team, Rhys leads one of HCA's most prominent student leadership groups. His responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating demonstration performances at community events and schools
  • Choreographing demonstration routines and performances
  • Conducting auditions and assessments for prospective team members
  • Planning and leading demonstration team training sessions
  • Supporting the growth and development of team members both on and off the mats

Outside of martial arts, Rhys works as a Software Engineer and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) with a Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice (Software) from the University of Technology Sydney. His professional background in technology, combined with his passion for martial arts, allows him to bring a unique perspective to leadership, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

Rhys believes that Hapkido provides lessons that extend far beyond self-defence, helping individuals develop strong character, leadership skills, self-confidence, and a lifelong commitment to personal growth. Through his teaching and leadership, he strives to help every student become the best version of themselves.
